The Talk: Recovering our Senses in the 21st Century

“The real adventure consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in seeing with new eyes” Proust

Why is it so difficult to stay with the calmness of just being present, at ease with the life around you? You might blame yourself, but in fact the problem is endemic – for our society creates a culture of disconnection. This talk looks at how that happens – how our architecture, our hierarchies, our language and our customs all lull us into believing that ‘disconnection’ is a natural state, and that ‘living in your head’ is our best strategy. Once you see how that reality of disconnection is created, you acquire choice in the matter – and then you can find your way back to the deep security of your being, and the clear passions of being alive in this world. This talk is based on Philip Shepherd’s book, New Self, New World, which has been greeted as “a masterpiece”.
